The Basics
Chalina is the eldest daughter of Alyssa Forte and Bernardo Noriega. She was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee along with her younger sister, Chantelle. Both parents work two jobs to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads, Alyssa working as a teacher's aide during the week and a waitress on the weekends and over the summer while her father worked in the deli at two separate grocery stores.
There were many days when she didn’t see her father at all because he went straight from one store to the other, but very occasionally his days off from each store overlapped and he stayed home. On those days he kept her out of daycare (or, later, school) and they spent the day at the park together. And when Chantelle came along three years after Chalina, she got to come along, too.
At bedtime their mother read stories to them. Chantelle liked stories about pirates and princesses and dragons, but Chalina’s favorites were the ones about ghosts. October quickly became her favorite month, because that was when her mother checked out all the Halloween stories from the library, and Halloween stories were the one time it was acceptable for children’s stories to be about ghosts.
When she was in elementary school she checked out the Halloween books from the school library all year round, until the librarian noticed and began suggesting other ghost stories to her. She was thrilled to discover that there was an entire genre!
When she was in middle school she discovered a local storytelling group that sometimes talked about local hauntings. She wanted to buy ghost hunting equipment, but her parents couldn’t afford to buy her any, and she didn’t have any money herself.
At the age of 12 she asked for permission to go with a group of amateur ghost hunters to visit a supposed haunted house. Her mother said yes, but only if she could chaperon. Chalina was thrilled to be there. It was while stalking the house that she manifested. She heard someone say there was a reading, and she inched over to get a closer look when she fell right through a wall.
At first everyone thought she was the ghost, but once they realized who it was who had just walked through the wall they changed their minds to possessed. Her mother took her home, and refused to let any of the ghost hunters see her daughter, but she didn’t know what had happened. It wasn’t until a recruiter from Hammel showed up the next day that meta powers even occurred to them.
Chalina thought that this was almost as cool as ghosts; she had heard of people with powers, but she had never met any, and it had never occurred to her that she might be one of them. Although she was a bit sad to part from her family she was still excited. And although her family was sad to part from her, they were also a tiny bit excited, too; not because of the powers, but because Hammel provided meals and a roof for students. They didn’t have to pay, and that would be one less mouth to feed while she was away at boarding school.
She’s made decent (though not outstanding) grades, especially in classes that require technological skills and in gym. She’s even made a few friends in the three years she’s been here. She’s not especially great at controlling her power, but she’s confident she’ll get there. At least she falls through her bed at night far less than she did when she first arrived.
Name: Chalina Arabella Noriega
Nicknames: Lina
Age: 15 (November 14th 2004)
Pronouns: she/herOrientation: lesbian
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers: Phasing -
Chalina can phase through solid objects. She can’t phase through anything that’s more than a foot of solid material, however.
She heard that once someone with phasing lost an arm, and sometimes this worries her, that she might lose a limb behind when phasing through something -- especially since she doesn’t have very good control yet.
While she’s phasing the item she’s phasing through feels like air, and air feels thick and heavy, but as soon as she has phased through again her body throbs all over. Even if she’s only pushed a hand through her entire body hurts, and if she phases more than five times in a day she’ll feel nauseous. If she does more phasing than that she’s been known to throw up.

The Details
Hair Color: black
Eye Color: brownHeight: 5'2Any Piercings? earlobes
Any Tattoos? nope
Any Scars? nothing unusual
General Appearance:
At 5’2” Chalina is on the shorter side, a fact that she is somewhat sensitive to. She makes up for this by dressing loudly. She likes leather, and black, and zippers, wild patterns, and giant earrings. She spends a great deal of time and what little money she has on her hair, which she prefers to keep in box braids. She also loves makeup, although she prefers more muted tones rather than anything either bright or pastel. Purple lipsticks and dark eye shadow are her go to looks, along with thick mascara and eyeliner. She also takes great care to shape and fill in her brows, because that's what's trendy, and she knows how to contour. Not that she wants anyone to think of her makeup skills before they think of her personality. It's simply part and parcel of the whole aesthetic.
Her bearing is one of confidence and cheer; if she isn’t smiling then she’s looking pensive rather than upset.
She's slim and because her energy and preference for PE she's in decent shape. More cardio than weight lifting means however that she's not especially muscular, although that's not necessary for the type of scrambling about she tends to do.
Personality: Chalina is a friendly girl. She’s happy to strike up a conversation with anyone, regardless of who they are. She doesn’t care if you’re a party girl or if you’re the fangirl in the corner writing fanfic, she’ll be happy to spend time with you. That said, she has very little patience for angst -- even justifiable angst. If you’re going to spend all your time feeling sorry for yourself then she’s not going to stick around. She also has very little patience for people who passively let life happen around them; she may try to get you out of your shell for a day or two, but that’s about her limit. She’s not going to push it.
She’s very difficult to get down, or even to anger -- although people have accused her of yelling and anger simply for talking loudly. And she is loud, when she’s excited about something. She’s also capable of sitting still for hours at a time, however, if she’s involved in a project that requires stillness and concentration.
She’s not bothered by what other people think of her. Sure, she likes other people, and she likes having people to spend time with, but she has few problems cutting people off if it isn’t working out.
She also loves a good debate, although she doesn’t care much whether she’s right or wrong. She simply likes to pick apart ideas and see how well they work.
