General Appearance: Valerie carries herself with a grace taught to her by her mother. She is usually seen to be wearing dresses or other clothing that 'flows' and she loves floral patterns. Sometimes, Valerie wears glasses, but usually finds it easier to wear contacts. She's about as blind as a bat without them on, and will bump into just about everything if she can't find them. Her eyes have been described as green or brown, but Val herself prefers the word 'hazel' to describe them. After all, eyes are the windows to the soul, and would rather her windows have a nice name, thank you very much. She keeps her clothing neat and in a way that it might be seen as a little perfectionist, and will definitely be quite upset if someone figures out a way to ruin her formal wear.
Valerie stands at a slightly above average height for women, and is nervous about it. She never wears heels, but even if she wasn't as tall, she would find the shoes uncomfortable, so she will usually wear shoes like flats, or sneakers. Despite almost never attempting to workout, Valerie and her girlfriend go hiking a lot, so she does not often worry about her weight. But regardless, Valerie is a little tempted whenever she sees ads for things that advertise weight loss. She is in the higher percentile for weight, and she knows it, but isn't too bothered unless it is pointed out to her, and doesn't consider herself overweight, just not in peak position, which is fine as a French teacher.
Valerie's hair is brown, and usually she just lets it down, unless she is going somewhere where she would need to be much more active or somewhere especially formal. In the case of a situation where she would need to be more active, it's usually something as simple as a ponytail or wearing a headband to keep her hair out of her eyes while she jogs or whatever the situation calls for. If the situation calls for a level of formal wear or the attitude of an area more stuffy, she would braid her hair in a complicated updo, like a braided bun, a french twist, or even just add some curl by doing some soft ringlets on her hair. The last one, she hates to do the most, as it takes quite a long time and it comes back to how it usually is in a few hours anyways, but it ended up being how she wore her hair to her wedding to Edmund, and she does love the memory aspect of the style, and will surprise her husband with it every so often, on special occasions. By itself, her hair is long and comes down to about the middle of her back. In the past, she wore it quite short, but has been loving growing it out long.
The grace and flow Val carries herself with was a part of her French upbringing. She used to attend a school where such posturing was considered very excellent, and so she prides herself on seemingly stiff and unapproachable posture when not focusing on such a thing. It makes her look a little bit unapproachable until she sees that someone is watching, at which point she becomes a little more casual, and lights up, similar to how a dog might when it sees someone it likes approaching.
One thing students will notice about Val is that she is quite young to be teaching, especially at a high school level. Though she is 24 years old and did earn a teaching degree, specifically for French, a language she could already speak fluently from a young age, she still appears younger, which irks her as she wants to receive respect from her students, especially the ones who would doubt she could teach them properly.
Valerie washes her hair regularly with a shampoo that smells of flowers, and usually wears a similar smelling perfume on top of that. As she is pregnant, expecting in early April or late March, she's been window shopping for maternity clothes a few times, but hasn't actually bought any yet, as she is too worried they won't fit her yet, or in the future. Her mother tells her she's getting that 'pregnancy glow' but Val doesn't see it.
Personality: Val has a lot of love in her heart to give. She's a cheerful and earnest person, and never feels like failure is an option, despite her parents putting a lot of pressure on her as their only child. When she was younger, she was a lot more naive, and still retains a small part of that naivety today, though her experiences have made her a little less naive to what goes on in the world around her, especially regarding politics and the treatment of powered people by some bigots, now that she is married to one.
Valerie tries to look for the best in everybody. She's met people that are bad, and people that she ended up not liking, but she always hopes that they can end up being at least cordial to each other, if not become friends later on. As a child, Valerie had only one friend, a meta-human boy in her neighborhood, but others weren't rude to her as long as she didn't get too far into their personal space.
Speaking of personal space, as an adult, it's one of the most difficult things for Valerie to handle. She wants to make sure everyone is doing okay, and even considered nursing as a career before settling on being a teacher. She tries her best to make sure everybody is heard. On the other hand, this can make Valerie seem very nosy, which she is. She does like to know when things are happening, and can often jump to conclusions. Valerie's more or less lonely childhood meant she was often reading books, and she tends to jump to quick conclusions because of this.

History
Valerie was born Valerie Masson in France, living there until she was seven years old, at which point she was uprooted for her father to get a job in Vermont. As her father was a security worker, he often ended up in situations that would mean his life was in danger, and Valerie and her mother were both worried at most times of day that something bad would happen to him. Learning English was difficult at first for Valerie, but she soon picked it up with the help of a neighbor boy, Edmund Norville. Edmund was Valerie's age, and they became fast friends, even going into second grade.
Valerie had always been aware of meta-humans. Some worked with her father, the people she called uncles and aunts. Some kids in her class had older siblings who had manifested their powers and even parents who had special powers. Valerie herself daydreamed of being able to fly all the way back to France to see the fish she'd been forced to leave behind as a young girl, but that quickly changed as Valerie began to understand the discrimination sometimes faced by those with powers. Nobody directly related to Valerie manifested, but her friend Edmund's parents and older sister all had some type of meta-human ability. Valerie wondered why there was a need for Diane, Edmund's sister, to leave to attend school at the Hammel Institute.
Valerie was separated from her best friend just before high school. The summer he turned 13, Edmund manifested an ability, and subsequently went to the Hammel Institue as his sister had. Devastated, and not having very many of her own friends left at her school, Valerie continued to write letters to Edmund while he was away at the Hammel Institute. From there, their love bloomed into a long-distance relationship while they were in high school. Edmund wrote of his friends Dana and 'Fairly,' both in his year at school. Following the graduation of all four from their respective schools, they went on to move in with Fairly in his rather large house in Pilot Ridge, Vermont.
Valerie went to college to study to become a teacher, while the other three also found something that interested them and got to do it for their jobs. Valerie and Edmund got engaged when they were 20, and got married when they were 21. Meanwhile, love was also blooming in the hearts of Dana and Fairly, the two becoming engaged when they were 22. As a group, they decided to try being poly-amorous, and it has worked well so far.
Valerie recently got a job teaching French at the school her loves studied at. She adores teaching, and this will be the first year that she actually gets her own class instead of being a student teacher at the local non-powered high school. Another recent event is the discovery of Valerie's pregnancy. She and the group hadn't really been trying, but it excited the four nonetheless. Ultrasounds confirmed through time that the baby was Edmund's, and Valerie was especially excited.
