Marnie Sullivan
Marnie is 22 years old, a graduate of Hammel Institute and the University of Vermont, and a resident of Pilot Ridge. She works as a barista at the Lighthouse Roasters cafe and lives in the Ridgeview Heights apartments. Her meta power is camouflage; she has one meta relative while most of her family is non-powered.
The lowdown: Marnie tries. She tries to be a good person, she tries to be likable, she tries to be smart and helpful, she tries to be what the people around her want her to be. Of course, nobody's perfect and you can't please everyone, but she certainly tries. Marnie is at a point in her life where she's juggling contradictory expectations from different sides of her family while she figures out who she is and what she wants out of life. Sooner or later someone's going to ask her, "Aren't you tired of being nice? Don't you just want to go apeshit?" And she will.
Friends: Marnie is a giver and tries to project a positive attitude, and some people will be drawn to that. She also has genuine interests worth bonding over; she loves to read and paint, and although she's hesitant to show anyone what she makes she can still be found in art shows and supply stores. If you love a thing, she's open to hearing about it if sharing it will make you happy (but she may research it later so that the next time you discuss it she'll know what she's talking about).
Enemies: Marnie may strike some people as a suckup, wishy-washy, noncommittal, or indecisive. The sorry thing about it is they would not technically be wrong. Characters who prefer bluntness or who are irritated by fake positivity will have a hard time getting along with Marnie. Someone pushing her to try new things may also be frustrated if she gives up early on, as she tends to do if she's not good at it right away.
Acquaintances: Marnie attended Hammel from October 2010 to June 2015, then the University of Vermont from August 2015 to May 2019. People who attended at the same time, especially in overlapping class tracks, may remember her or even have worked on projects with her. She has worked at the Lighthouse Roasters cafe since August 2019, so has had some time to become familiar with regulars. She can be spotted going for morning runs near her neighborhood, attending community events, browsing bookstores and the library, and visiting the LGBT Center.
Romance: Marnie is bisexual, which she realized as a teenager. In high school and college she had a small number of superficial relationships with people of multiple genders, relationships which didn't work out for a variety of reasons. She has a dreamy sort of idea about love (mainly from the books she reads) but is unsure how to go about achieving it. Although she has had time to adjust to being bi, she still struggles with it from time to time because she has a hard time separating the gender of someone she's dating from the expectations of different sides of her family.
Family: None of Marnie's family lives in Pilot Ridge anymore, but her parents and grandfather are a daytrip away in Maine. Her Aunt Roz (bioluminescence) lives in New York City. She has no siblings.
