Ryn Leigh Burns

17 | Personal Kinetic Force Field | Student

The best way to describe Ryn is simply being a wallflower. She is a shy loner by nature, tending to keep to herself and can often be found in quiet areas by herself. Despite this, Ryn is very much a nerd in some subjects and thoroughly enjoys reading, art, and researching when free time permits. She is one of those teenagers that has hit the awkward stages of life and still deals with them, which isn’t helped by being a meta-human in which case she feels her powers only reflect her outer nature.

Friends: Due to her loner, quiet nature Ryn has never been that good at making friends. In fact, she has been lucky to have more than six friends at any time and tends to prefer having a few close ones rather than several. Though, that is not to say she isn’t above making them, she just finds it difficult to warm up to people right away and may take time to come out of that shell she has created since she was a little girl. However, she does tend to open up fast around those that share her interests such as art, comics, reading, writing, and soccer, usually gravitating towards those in these social circles most than those outside them. Given time though, someone will discover that Ryn can be stubborn, kind, and social, and is deeply loyal to her friends, willing to do anything to help them.

Enemies: Ryn actively tries to avoid making enemies or causing problems. But, she has made them. Being so quiet and not exactly part of the “popular” crowd has earned her a few bullies and enemies, making Ryn hold a brief grudge against the students at her old school before moving to Vermont. She is not one to go looking for trouble or to cause it, but she does seem to have a habit to attract it from time to time, sometimes even joking she is an attraction for bad luck. But, she does consider certain groups as enemies, such as those who fit the “popular girl” look or who have such a full of themselves attitude,hypocrites, those who are prejudice, and overly religious individuals. Being somewhat agnostic herself, Ryn has had her share of bad experiences with devout religious individuals; she does not hate such individuals by any means but she is not a fan of religion largely due to her personal beliefs and views and people verbally attacking her for it.

Romance: Perhaps even more awkward than trying to make friends. Ryn’s orientation is bisexual, but despite almost being through high school she has never dated, not even had a first kiss. Despite being attracted to both males and females, the latter of which she began to discover towards eight grade, she leans more towards liking males but finds her shyness kick into new levels whenever around someone she has a crush on. Though she tends to befriend guys more than girls, it’s another thing entirely when she finds herself attracted to them, in which case she finds herself tongue-tied and unable to properly form words.

As of right now, pretty open to whatever plots!

yes, hello, Ryn is in the multicultural club with Elias and Reema annnnd is rooming with Elias and Dante. ALSO she was in Thomasville, GA according to your app? WELL the new music teacher, James, is from Hahira which isn't super far away from there all things considered. V v close to Valdosta. So there might be something there?

if not I mean no worries, we can come up with reasons to plot. I know none of these ideas are like THREAD IDEAS but I have to ramble to get to the ideas point and I'm about to head to bed but I wanted to start with jotting down the vary basics before I run away to sleep.

Her roommate is a huge nerd so there's that. He's not an introvert, though, he's an excitable extroverted nerd who can and will make way too much noise from Atlanta. I hope she enjoys trying to study while someone tries to sing every single part to whatever soundtrack he's bingeing at the moment. Reema is more the quiet type, and Mr. Fawcett is....super quiet and awkward and would relate to that haha but since she's not in music I'm not sure what to suggest there yet.

I have a bunch of other characters, those are just the ones I have the most immediate thoughts on soooo yes look forward to threading with you!

[Dr. Sean Neville]

Hello, Tundra, and welcome to Hammel!

I have only a couple of characters, but I also fill in gaps with NPCs who are also available for threads.

First, Dr. Sean Neville is the resident psychiatrist and acting Headmaster of the Hammel Institute. He keeps tabs on students with history of social difficulty, and his office is always open to someone who needs to chat or otherwise needs to hide away for one reason or another. Fifty years ago, he was that student and understands. He is a strong telepath and has a sweet tooth that is often parlayed into treats kept in his office. When she first came to Hammel, he was employed as the psychiatrist but was only promoted to headmaster over the summer - as background information.

Second, Simon Ettinger would be her biology teacher if she is enrolled currently or if he took the class last year. He is introverted and silently battling depression, although he does his best to conceal this from the students. He is strong receptive empath and a middling receptive telepath and would envy her for her power's applications and nature, while also sympathizing with her lack of control over it. Empathy often feels similar in that regard. He currently doesn't advise any clubs but he is a nerd in his own right and enjoys animal taxonomy if she ever wanted to go bird watching. He's friends with James Fawcett, the music teacher, and we could work out a way for them to interact. As an aside, one of Oreo's characters - Chalina Noriega - is convinced that he's demon possessed and has been spreading rumors to everyone who will listen.

For my NPCs:

First is Poppy Brewer, an electrokinetic child of hippies from California. Although she's only 14, she and Ryn would get along, I think. She's also in the art club and her mediums are sketching and water colors, and then she makes jewelry and knits. She's introverted but not at all shy, sweet and welcoming, and an overall positive person, someone that Ryn might want to collect as a friend. Especially because her side effects including static shocks and cling and having someone she won't accidentally electrify would be great peace of mind. (The same for her roommate, Dante, who is also an electrokinetic who just joined art club).

Next is Joseph Palladino. He's a 15 year old pyrokinetic from Upstate New York and belongs to the Multicultural Club with her. He's introverted, kind, and laid back; he also wears eyeliner because his big sister, in the midst of a goth phase, infected him with only that little bit of the bug. As such, he's used to standing out a bit. He loves comics and Pokemon Go, and if he sees her reading a title, he'll engage her about it. He also loves almost everything about his Italian heritage which can be both positive and negative depending on how she feels about cured meats and Italian bakeries. Additionally, she looks a bit like his other sister, Tessa, which could be fun for threads.

Last for now is Brandon Kaufman, a 15 year old with pixie wings and hallucinogenic dust. He dislikes his power to the extent that it's impossible to be taken serious if one's power has the word pixie in the name. He loves theater and music and has a bit of a dramatic presence about him, but he's extroverted while still having some sense of boundaries. Because of the theater connection, he interacts with Elias and so she would see him around her dorm sometimes. He brings with him his BFF, Irving Coley, Jr. who is one of the few students at the school who makes his family look poor (which is good for threads about class differences). Also, they both have February birthdays.

Some broader notes - if she was around during Thanksgiving, the Friday after Hammel had a Thanksgiving feast which is still open to everyone who was around, if you want the ability to mingle without tossing snowballs. I know that you said your graphic skills are lackluster, but our monthly writing challenge is still up for entries until the end of the week, and everyone is encouraged to participate if they wish. Stories need to be 300 words minimum.

Finally, the Snow War has no post order so you need not wait on everyone if you want to write more replies.

Hammel Staff:
Honestly, I think Ryn would no doubt look towards Mr. Fawcett and Mr.Ettinger as sort of role models and examples. She always has that fear at the back of her mind that being the shy introvert that she is could seriously affect her future goals, whether her career choice or being able to have a life at all, and seeing those two being able to live could give her hope. Of course they would have their personal matters, but she would definitely maybe go to them from time to time to talk or for advice of how they’ve tackled certain matters and gotten where they are today.

Although, she would respectfully avoid bringing up religion around Fawcett most likely considering how own stance on the subject would be the only thing.

Same would go for Dr. Norville. He would most likely be the person she’s discuss ways to cope with her social anxiety and ways to better get past the barrier that is her shyness that feels like a severe hindrance to her getting anywhere in life.

Fellow Hammel Students
I imagine Elias and Ryn would be on pretty good terms since she tends to open up faster around those who are also nerds. And I’m guessing they would have been roommates for a while by now (if I’ve got their timing right) so she probabaly is comfortable around him enough her shyness would have ebbed slightly. As for the music thing, she doesn’t mind so long as it’s not rap then she might throw a pillow at him...a lot! XD

Ryn and Poppy likely would be fast friends from the sounds of it. They may be slightly different in terms of their art areas and somewhat in personality, but overall not too far off enough that they couldn’t forge something here. She would definitely not mind maybe learning a couple things from Poppy, or even seeing her as sort of the little sister she never had given that she has a brother the same age.

I imagine Ryn would have a field day getting to know Reema and Joseph, especially their cultures and heritages compared to herself, which she knows so little about. She might connect with Reema more in terms of their personalities being very similar but some of their interests not quite being the same so I definitely would be interested to see how their interactions would go, maybe even Reema being one of those who can bring the social side of Ryn. And Joseph and Ryn I see geeking out a lot since she loves comics and is a huge Pokémon nerd.

I don’t quite have a thread idea for Ryn and Brandon, but I imagine she knows him a small bit by association given his connection to Elias. I would say the two are maybe acquaintances at best?

[Micah and Moses Grey]

I've got a few characters I could toss your way.

First Micah and Moses are a bit younger than her, but if they see a loner they will try to draw her out of her shell and might not be so quick to realize that's not something she wants.

I also have two Hammel staff, Declan and Scott. Declan is the Head Librarian and also a loner who knows that sometimes people just need a quiet space to relax. Scott, who is Micah and Moses's Pops and the IT specialist/parttime handyman at Hammel, is also from the South and has a lot of love in his heart to give to any Hammel student struggling. Both would be happy to give advice

Sean:
I am actually interested in doing a thread between Ryn and Brandon since they wouldn’t know each other so well. Very much a getting to know you sort of thread might be fun I believe, especially when he’s friends with Elias and around a lot.

Micah and Moses:
I can already see these two would likely give her flashbacks to her brother the moment they meet. She may come to find them annoying for the most part, but seems like nothing she wouldn’t be use to.

Declan and Scott:
Declan might find Ryn a familiar face. She is the sort that loves to read so a lot of her time is spent at libraries and bookstores, and the Hammel library just might be a quiet getaway he would see her at often enough. Like with other Hammel staff she would definitely come to them for advice if they are available, or just have a conversation.

[Marnie Sullivan]

Hi Tundra! Ryn and Marnie have some interests in common, specifically reading and art, so I think it could be fun having them meet at an event like an art show or a reading at the local library. If they get to know each other and Marnie finds out Ryn is also a Hammel student, I could see her trying to insert herself as a helpful older sister type (which Ryn may not be super comfortable with, Marnie could definitely come across as overbearing, so it's up to you if you'd want to go down that road).
